How does Affiliate Marketing work?

I started learning about Affiliate Marketing in August of 2023, so I do not pretend to know everything about it. However, the core principles remain the same whether you are a beginner or you have been doing it for years. Simply put, it consists of three (3) main parties, The Merchant, The Affiliate, and The Customer. It is a performance-based marketing strategy.

Key Players

Merchants (Advertisers): These are the businesses or product creators who want to promote their products or services through affiliate marketing. They provide the products or services and set the terms of the affiliate program.

Affiliates (Publishers): Affiliates are individuals or entities that partner with merchants to promote their products or services. They do this through various marketing channels like websites, blogs, social media, email marketing, or even YouTube channels.

Consumers (Traffic): These are the end-users who visit the affiliate's platform and, if convinced, make a purchase. They are the ultimate target of affiliate marketing campaigns.

The Process

The affiliate (you) applies to promote a product or service. There are marketplaces such as Clickbank, or Digistore24 that list products for which you can apply to be an affiliate. You are given an Affiliate Link that is specific to you, which you then promote to potential buyers. Usually, affiliates promote these links through websites, social media, and email marketing. You are given a commission, either a percentage of the price of the product,(e.g. 40%) or a fixed amount,(e.g. $20) for every sale you generate. The more sales you generate, the higher your income will be.

The Competition

Affiliate Marketing has become very competitive as more and more people are looking for ways to earn a living online or supplement their regular income. Many so-called gurus promote Affiliate Marketing as a get-rich-quick scheme, however, in my experience, that is very far from the truth. I had to completely change my thinking when faced with the reality of Affiliate Marketing compared to what was being preached by these gurus. As a beginner, you will be faced with a lot of this, and if you fall into that mental trap it will be very hard to recover. I believe many people become disenchanted because of this and give up. You will have to build it as any other business. It will take time and effort, as with any other business.
