What Is Affiliate Marketing?
I want to first establish a little groundwork before we get into the main topic. It is only fair that we understand what Affiliate Marketing is before considering its legitimacy. In simple terms, Affiliate Marketing is a form of marketing as the name suggests. In Affiliate Marketing, the Affiliate, (a person) promotes a product created by someone else. The Affiliate receives a commission for every sale that they can generate. This commission can be a percentage of the product's price (e.g.40%) or a fixed value, ($20).
Therefore, in principle, an Affiliate Marketer is a salesperson who is paid in commissions. Just as a salesperson will visit different physical stores to promote a product and is paid a salary. However, the Affiliate does not have a fixed salary, but their income is tied to the sales they obtain. The Affiliate also does their marketing online rather than physically.
Why is it seen as a scam?
Why then is it seen as a "scam" or in a negative light? The problem, in my opinion, has arisen due to the idea generated by so-called "gurus" that Affiliate Marketing is a get-rich-quick scheme. People coming into this space don't see it as a job or business, but as a way to make money overnight without any work. Many are told, "Just pick a product, get a link, promote the link and you will make hundreds or even thousands of dollars". If I said to you, that to be a doctor all you have to do is write prescriptions and you will make hundreds or thousands of dollars, would you believe me? Do you think that someone following my advice would succeed? Of course, they will fail.
With that mentality, when they inevitably fail, they call it a scam. "I did what they said and never got a sale, it's a scam". Unfortunately, some even paid these so-called gurus and got nothing in return. They bought the hype and never took the time to learn what Affiliate Marketing really is.
The foundation of Affiliate Marketing.
A successful Affiliate Marketing business is built on a foundation of honesty and trust. Affiliate Marketers do not physically interact with customers, so you must build trust by being honest with the people whom you wish to purchase from your link. This does not happen overnight. If you are honest with potential customers, they will trust you. When they trust you, they will buy from you.
Consider your family doctor, they are someone that you trust, otherwise, you will find someone else. You trust that they will give you the best medical advice to treat your problem or illness. They earned your trust over time by listening to you and built that relationship by giving you an honest assessment of your condition or sickness.
Conclusion.
In conclusion, Affiliate Marketing is not a scam. It is a legitimate business model and in my opinion, one of the best online business models for a beginner. But, it is a business, not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you don't approach it as a business, it will be extremely difficult to succeed. Therefore, the scam is the idea of Affiliate Marketing that is perpetrated by these unscrupulous "gurus". True Affiliate Marketing and the principles it is built upon are not a scam.
